Function and Applications

With this group experiment the following topics can simulated:

• General natural selection
• Adaptive radiation
• Selecton of diverse characteristics
• Survival chances of mutations
• Selection effects of predators
• Founder principle

The students simulate natural selection with coloured chips on different environment mats. They compete as predators versus predators. Their prey, which is be distributed on the environment mat, must be collected as fast as possible. The students simulate the survival chances of individuals in a population. Already in the second generation selection develops into a clear direction.

Contents of the game: 2 different environment mats, different chips in plastic cans, 1 shaker can, 1 set of colour goggles, 1 eye patch, 1 destiny card, 1 dice, utensils with which the selection process towards the predator population can be reversed, detailed experiment guide, in stable case with compartments.
